Paco Jemez gushed after Rayo Vallecano’s 3-1 win over Getafe that this was the best performance from his team since his arrival in the summer.

Rayo oversaw their Madrid rivals in convincing fashion on Monday night thanks to a goal from Lass and a double from Piti.

“This match is probably the best we have done since I have been here. That first half an hour was better than normal,” enthused former defender Jemez at full-time.

“Rayo has done what they had to do, has created chances and if we have been successful then we could have scored more goals.

“I believe that we can still do better and that things can be improved. It is hard to play like we did in the first 30 minutes, but I do believe that the team has room for improvement and we need to demand more.

“Beyond taking our chances, we must assess the number of chances created. That means that we are working well. Generating as many as that and remaining strong in defence will mean we will win many points.

“We have done what we have so far because of the experience of our players, I should not reproach any of them.”

Rayo sit in seventh place in La Liga, two points away from a Europa League spot and three behind the final Champions League berth.

“Although I am optimistic and I always put in my best on the pitch, I had not thought we would be in as good a position as we are now. I have the experience of previous years in teams on a budget and those teams have done great things too. The budget helps, but is not everything.

“Humble people, with hope and courage are able to get certain things. Arriving in the summer I have been trusted in the way I work and there has been the commitment to achieve something important.

“We have still not achieved anything, we have to think that we have not done much yet, but that this is the way to improve.”
