Europe not on Montanier’s mind

Real Sociedad Coach Philippe Montanier is still fixated on securing safety despite his side’s five game unbeaten run.

La Real have begun to be tipped for European qualification, having climbed up to 9th in the standings, but Montanier sees it as a long shot.

“We know we would need about 55 points, and at the moment we are far from that,” said the Frenchman in his Press briefing before the weekend’s visit to Granada. Levante took La Liga’s last European qualification berth with 55 points last season.

“But the good dynamic we have gives people hope and trust in us. In football there is little difference between victory and defeat and the players have to maintain their attitude.”

Montanier is wary of wounded Granada.

“When you play against a team that is going through a bad time and is very motivated, it is difficult. But this is a very important game for both teams.

“We are aware of their quality, they deserve more points. Above all they are very good on the ball.”

Lampooned for their awful away record earlier in the season, La Real are now three unbeaten on their travels.

“That’s what we wanted from the start, but what’s most important is the future. We have a good level home and away now, and that’s important for our confidence. Let’s try and achieve our fourth game away from home without defeat.”
