Aritz Aduriz has admitted that Athletic Bilbao’s Cup elimination is a ‘complete disaster’, but not one borne out of overconfidence.
The Basques were knocked out of the Copa del Rey at the Round of 32 stage last night on away goals, after only drawing 1-1 with Segunda Division B outfit Eibar.
“It was a very bad night. We have not kept pace. It’s a complete disaster, we have dropped out of the Europa League and the Cup,” Aduriz reflected to reporters.
“The team was aware that we faced a difficult tie. We did not go into this with overconfidence. Now we have to bow our heads and deal with our mistakes.
“It is not about sending messages but making right for past events. We have no excuse, we should have gone through to the next round.”
The forward then turned his attention to the weekend’s match away at Mallorca.
“We need to focus 100 per cent on the Mallorca game. It is all we have left, the only thing to grab on to. We will not be able to escape this though, if we do well or not.”
