Malaga, Atleti’s financial incentive

Both Atletico Madrid and Malaga have financial motivations in place to win their final group stage European games this week.

Malaga are already assured of their place in the Last 16 of the Champions League, ahead of welcoming Anderlecht to La Rosaleda on Tuesday night.

The Anchovies are also already secured in top spot, but go into the game aware that UEFA prize money for a win stands at €1m.

In a similar way, Atleti go into their Europa League match on Thursday already with a place in the Round of 32 guaranteed.

However, winning their last game away to Viktoria Plzen and finishing top in the group would also bring in further finances, in the shape of €200,000 awarded per win and €400,000 for securing top spot.

Atleti were last week awarded by UEFA their €2.1m prize money accumulated so far, after previously having it frozen under Financial Fair Play regulations, but Malaga’s case is still pending, meaning they have yet to access their money earned from this year’s debut campaign in the Champions League.
