Mendilibar: We can see the light

Osasuna boss Jose Luis Mendilibar feels his side must make use of home advantage against second division Sporting Gijon.

The two clubs meet at El Sadar tomorrow night for the resolution of their Copa del Rey last 32 tie, underdogs Gijon holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

“We have to demonstrate from the off who is playing at home,” said Mendilibar in his pre-match media briefing. “Being 1-0 down is neither good nor bad, even if there is the fear that if they score one you need three.

“Many times playing the second leg at home isn’t beneficial. We have to win, that’s for sure, so we’ll go for it from the first minute. They will want to beat a top notch team, and they have a great opportunity to play Valencia in the next round.”

The Pamplona outfit are still mired in the relegation zone in La Liga but have shown some improvement lately, going three games unbeaten.

“I hope that we keep playing well and can be a bit more aggressive in attack. We are still in a hole, but the tunnel is not quite so long and we can see the light.”
