Amorebieta stalling attracts interest

Fernando Amorebieta could find himself in a similar situation to Athletic Bilbao teammate Fernando Llorente in January, able to talk to interested clubs.

Llorente has so far refused to sign a new contract with the club and is free from January to discuss a summer 2013 move with interested parties, with his deal expiring in June 2013.

Amorebieta is reported today as potentially also finding himself free to discuss terms with other clubs from the turn of the year, as negotiations over the renewal of his June 2013-expiring contract stall.

The Venezuelan international has been in talks over a new deal since the summer and the general expectation in the media and through the words of both the club and the player has been that an agreement would be reached soon.

However, it is understood that negotiations have stalled, with Amorebieta pushing for €2m a season from his five-year offer and Athletic not moving up from a €1.8m salary offer.

The situation is such that the player’s agent is reportedly testing the market for potential interest in the 27-year-old from elsewhere.
