Atletico two from 200

Atletico Madrid are tonight two goals away from scoring 200 goals in European competition at the Vicente Calderon stadium.

Lining up tonight for their home tie with Hapoel Tel Aviv, Diego Simeone’s side could enter into a third century of goals scored in Europe in front of their own crowd if they score twice.

The team’s first goal at the Calderon in Europe came from Luis Aragones against Malmo in the first round of the European Cup back in 1966-67. It was 11 years later in the same competition before No 50 was reached, thanks to Luiz Pereira against Nantes.

European goal No 100 scored at the ground on the banks of the Manzanares was netted during the 1996-97 Champions League campaign by Esnaider, whilst 150 was managed in the same competition in 2008-09 by Kun Aguero.

Tonight’s Group B match with Israel’s Hapoel Tel Aviv could see the Rojiblancos book a place in the knockout stages of the Europa League, a competition they won last season.
