Mendilibar: Drop zone? Who cares

Jose Luis Mendilibar, Coach of bottom club Osasuna, says he does not care whether the Rojillos exit the relegation zone.

The Pamplona outfit, who recorded only their second win of the season against Espanyol last weekend, can climb out of the bottom three if they defeat Malaga tomorrow and results elsewhere go their way.

“I prefer to score points,” the former Real Valladolid boss stated at a media engagement today. “I don't care if we exit the relegation zone, because in the end what counts is to reach 40 points.”

Mendilibar admits the Espanyol result has had a positive effect on morale but is striving to ensure his squad do not relax.

“This week has been more cheerful, everyone has experienced everything differently, but we have not won anything yet. We had a bit of luck against Espanyol, but also played 25 very good minutes. Hopefully it convinces us that we can do it against any opponent and on any field.”

The 51-year-old tactician recognises the important role the El Sadar crowd have to play.

“If we all look at the same thing , it's easy to get out of these situations. And in this sense, I have no doubt of the fans of Osasuna. Even the victory over Espanyol can help the unbelievers to cheer us. Having said that I still think general whistles, not those aimed at individual players, can help us to fight at certain times in the game.”
