I’m not just a Cup ‘keeper says Pinto

Barcelona goalkeeper Jose Manuel Pinto says he is not just somebody who plays in the Copa del Rey.

Among other things he believes that ‘it would be wrong if Tito [Vilanova] says I am just a ‘keeper for the Cup’.

Pinto has seen his first-team chances at the Camp Nou limited since signing from Celta Vigo in 2008, having to play second fiddle to Victor Valdes during that time, but he feels that a place in the side must be something that is earned on merit.

“Pep Guardiola never said I would just be playing from start to finish in the Copa del Rey.

“You have to earn it and Vilanova has trusted me, but it would be wrong for Tito to say I’m just a goalkeeper for the Cup. It’s a mistake he has not made,” Pinto told RAC1’s Primer Toc programme.

“I would understand it if Victor played some Cup matches as it is the Coach who decides which ‘keeper is best for each game, but you need to earn your place just like the rest of the players.”

Asked about his future at the club he was very clear in which direction he is heading.

“I’m very relaxed as I am every year. Since I arrived, if it had been up to the journalists I’d have been out of here a long time ago.

“Some of them, who I admire and love, I’ll send a greeting to as they have trusted me so much. Really, it doesn’t worry me because I’ll keep on giving my best.

“If I have to stay another year then I’ll be delighted. I’m very happy and my family is very happy in Barcelona.

“My child is Catalan and if the club wants me then that would be great.”
