‘Refs look at the bench too much’

Valencia midfielder David Albelda believes that match officials are giving too much attention to what happens during games on the bench.

A number of Coaches have been sent from their technical area during games this season and this weekend saw Los Che lose Mauricio Pellegrino and later his assistant for acts of protest during their side’s win over Atletico Madrid.

The situation sees the Coaches and the referees exchanging views in public and, according to Albelda, is a consequence of the officials placing too much attention on the sidelines.

“The tension from the pitch is transmitted to the bench. But, I think that referees are too conscious of the bench,” the Valencia man told AS today. “They look too often to what is happening there.

“Coaches are people, they have an enormous stake in every game, they have an area in which to work each game and if respectful or disrespectful they should have some freedom.

“You cannot dismiss someone for throwing a bottle.”
