Mel values points, not position

Pepe Mel has downplayed the possibility of Real Betis entering into the top four this weekend, choosing to focus only on winning at Getafe.

A win at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Monday night would see Los Beticos edge a point ahead of Malaga into fourth position in the table.

“The sensations depend on who you ask. If you ask the Coaches, then it is ‘damn’,” half-joked the Coach at today’s conference.

“In Week 10, to be in the Champions League places is because we have done things very well. The important thing is the points, not where you are in the table. Nobody gives a prize for being in that position at that time.”

The mood marks a sharp contrast to the midweek Cup defeat to Real Valladolid.

“Clearly we are in different competitions, the starting XIs will be different, the mentality of each competition will be different also. We can fix the situation against Valladolid, but against Getafe if you lose then you cannot get the three points.

“We played almost the same midfield as we did against Valencia, but in different games we should never lose. We were wrong in our final pass and it is something we have to keep in mind for tomorrow.”

Tomorrow is the trip to play Getafe, who are also in good form at the moment.

“If you remove the top teams from the League then they and Real Sociedad are the ones that you find next. They are one of the teams that I like.

“Getafe with Leon, Castro, Barrada have speed and then in defence they are a compact unit. Their objective is never just survival but to look up in the table, so that makes them a tough opponent.”
