Bilbao go down to late Lyon goal

A last-gasp Jimmy Briand goal meant Athletic Bilbao stayed rooted to the bottom of Group I after a 2-1 loss away to Olympique Lyonnais.

With Marcelo Bielsa's side looking for their first win of this Europa League campaign, it was perhaps no surprise they came lying out of the blocks.

Los Leones dominated possession and created the best chance of the half, only for Aritz Aduriz to fluff his lines and produce a heavy touch after Ander Herrera's delightful pass.

That came back to haunt the Basque side after the break, as Lopez got on the end of an Anthony Reveillere cross to give Gorka Iraizoz no chance.

Bafetimbi Gomis and Fabian Monzon threatened to double the French side's lead late on, but it was Athletic who scored with just ten minutes to go.

Fernando Llorente showed his class to hold up play, before laying in Ibai Gomez for a classy finish that took the San Mames side off the bottom of Group I.

The draw was ultimately not to be though, as Briand tapped in after Gueida Fofana's initial effort was spilled by Iraizoz.
