Fontas to join Mallorca on loan

Barcelona central defender Andreu Fontas is heading to Real Mallorca on loan until the end of the season.

The news was confirmed on Barca’s official website and the player will undergo a medical on Monday afternoon before being unveiled at a Press conference.

The 22-year-old has been left out of boss Tito Vilanova’s plans at the Camp Nou this term and will be looking to provide competition for Los Bermellones’ Brazilian pair Anderson Conceicao and Pedro Jeromel at the Iberostar Stadium.

It is understood that Mallorca boss Joaquin Caparros was interested in bringing Jonathan dos Santos to Mallorca before Fontas’ name cropped up, with negotiation for the Mexican having failed due to his reluctance to leave Barca despite his brother Giovani now with the Islanders.

Mallorca have suffered injuries to four key players over the last month, all of them scheduled to be out for between three and six months: Javi Marquez, Antonio Lopez, Victor and Joao Nunes.
