Rayo ovation emotional for Piti

Rayo Vallecano captain Piti says the ovation given him by fans on his substitution against Deportivo de La Coruna left him emotional.

The Catalan-born player scored Rayo’s first goal in the 2-1 victory at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas and confessed it had been a very touching moment for him.

“I wanted to score to help the team win and I dedicate the goal to my grandmother, who died a few days ago and was very special,” he told the club’s official website.

“I could not ask for more from the fans. I gave everything and greatly appreciate the ovation they gave me, which made me very emotional.

“I’m somebody who tries to help whenever I can because this is a family, as has been shown. I thank everyone because it has been a very difficult time and their support has been vital.”

Piti said the win over Depor was equally important as it helped to lay the ghosts of the embarrassing 6-1 humiliation at Real Valladolid the previous week.

“It was imperative we win to forget about the nightmare of that defeat because the six goals we conceded at Valladolid did us a lot of damage.

“However, the three points we got against Depor will be very valuable to the future of the team,” he maintained.
