Rosell: Xavi ‘a landmark’

Barcelona President Sandro Rosell says the club will do everything they can to keep Xavi at Camp Nou for the rest of his career.

Agent Ivan Corretja yesterday confirmed that the Blaugrana were seeking to renew and improve the influential midfielder's current deal, which expires in 2014.

“He is a landmark, a historic player,” Rosell stated to AS. “We will do everything we can to keep him here, and I think he also wants to end his career with the club.”

Rosell was speaking in New York, where he presented the President of the local Barca fan club with a shirt inscribed with today's date.

“I love that there are Barcelona fans in groups all over the world, because it helps strengthen our roots” he added.

Rosell will meet with the chairman of the Inter-American Development Bank today to discuss projects promoting sport in Latin America, and with billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates tomorrow.

“We are doing some projects with the club in Rio De Janeiro, but we want to do more in Argentina and Mexico as soon as we can.

“Gates has began a very ambitious project, he is the creator, and Barca will help him to try and eradicate polio.”
