Iturra proud to be at Malaga

Manuel Iturra has reflected on making his Malaga debut in the midweek Champions League match, and on the competition he faces in midfield.

The summer signing came on after the break on Tuesday night against Zenit St Petersburg for his first appearance for the side.

“I am proud to be at Malaga during this historic moment for the club and its players,” he reflected to reporters today.

“Sitting on the bench and listening to the Champions League song was incredible. It was a matter of the team enjoying the occasion and they did, playing a great game.

“Pellegrini asked me to come on, to win the ball and to play it simple. Already 2-0 up at the time, it was important to maintain order and also the result, as a goal for Zenit could have built momentum for them and have played on our mind.

“Possession was an important tactic for Malaga, then came the third goal and that gave us peace of mind.”

Iturra’s main competition in midfield looks to be from Ignacio Camacho and Jeremy Toulalan.

“This is a competitive fight, that is true. Camacho and Jeremy are two great players, when one of them is injured it is significant for the club. Camacho has also been one of the most consistent, but in the end it is the Coach who makes the decision.”

The midfielder then looked ahead to the weekend match with Athletic Bilbao.

“They are a very strong team that press in all parts of the pitch and they are very strong at their own ground. But, Malaga will pick up three points.”
