Bielsa: Athletic could have won

Athletic Bilbao Coach Marcelo Bielsa is content with his side’s exciting 3-3 draw at Espanyol, but is adamant that they could have taken all three points.

“It is a valuable result but we could have won looking as the chances we had,” explained the Argentine tactician in his post-match interview at the Estadi Cornella-El Prat.

“We fought back twice but then invited them to score at times. The team does not have a defensive stability and it doesn’t help. Our movements were erratic and collective errors generated an unevenness to the game.

“In the first half we defended poorly but the second gave away few goal situations and possession was much more stable.

“We also attacked better and improved our accuracy in the Espanyol area.”

Fernando Llorente returned to action for the Basque outfit and scored for the first time this season after being linked with a move abroad throughout the summer.

“Goals always impact your performance and the views of the supporters, it was a positive display. Aritz Aduriz also adds excitement upfront and deserves recognition.”

Despite a poor start for opponents Espanyol, Bielsa is convinced they can still compete in La Liga.

“I think the three games they have lost do not describe the team and I think I don’t think they will suffer. In addition, everyone should still remember that you need all players to be available.”
