Athletic win ‘valuable, if…’

Marcelo Bielsa sees value in Athletic Bilbao’s win today over Real Valladolid, but only if it is a ‘starting point’ for the season.

The Basques ran out 2-0 winners at San Mames over Miroslav Djukic’s side to pikc up their first points of the season after beginning it with consecutive defeats.

“This will be valuable if it is a starting point as for now it just represents an interruption of the sequence of two defeats,” Bielsa declared afterwards.

“There was tension in the group linked to the irregular performances, by the instability of the team. It has not been a regular summer here and that can cause concern.”

The Coach gave a curious response to being asked if he knew whether or not the club had made a bid for Malaga’s Nacho Monreal on deadline day, as was rumoured.

“I do get informed of the development in negotiations, but sometimes I answer that I don’t know because I believe that the club governs the provision of information.

“I do see a club concerned with strengthening the team.”
