Valera: Getafe are ambitious

Getafe defender Juan Valera believes his team is capable of fighting for more than just top-flight safety in the 2012-13 campaign.

Los Azulones finished mid-table last term, eight points off the European places, but the former Atletico Madrid man told a Press conference that he feels Luis Garcia Plaza’s outfit is better equipped to make a push for the top spots this time around.

“We know that year after year the quality in the Getafe squad rises. We know we have a good team, but the best way is to take things match-by-match.

“There are some great players here and we can be ambitious. Every year we are improving, not only myself but at a group level,” explained Valera, who considers the side from the south of Madrid will get better as the season progresses.

“We still have two pre-season games left to polish certain things and take on board new ideas.

“The team will be in perfect condition by the time of the opening fixture against Sevilla and will be in even better physical shape the longer the season goes on.”

Valera acknowledged there is now a more competitive edge to the Getafe squad and thinks it will be difficult for anybody to hold down a starting place at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

“In my position there is Alvaro Arroyo and Miguel Torres. It will be hard to get into the side and we will all have to train extremely hard.

“The good thing about this Getafe is that you can pick two good starting line-ups and both will be very competitive,” he added.
