Athletic admit Amorebieta injury

Athletic Bilbao have admitted Fernando Amorebieta could miss the start of the season with a serious groin injury.

The Venezuelan international was forced to delay his return to pre-season training two weeks ago with what the club now says is a pubalgia, something that could require surgery after all other possibilities have been explored.

Pubalgia was originally known as Sport’s Hernia or Sportsman’s Hernia and describes severe abdominal and groin pain experienced by athletes without any evidence of an actual hernia upon physical examination, while perhaps the most well-known sufferer has been Real Madrid’s Brazilian midfielder Kaka.

A statement on the Basque club’s official website maintained that ´the injury will be treated when the infection disappears`, although it is not the first time the 27-year-old has suffered from groin problems, having played just 17 games in the 2010-11 campaign with a similar ailment.
