Zidane ‘can’t explain’ Madrid draw

Gareth Bale scored a brace on his return, but Real Madrid could only draw 2-2 with Celta Vigo and Zinedine Zidane confessed he had no explanation.

Bale marked his first start in four months with two goals in as many first-half minutes, but Maxi Gomez’s late equaliser ensured Celta ended the week with draws against Los Blancos and Barcelona – who moved 16 points clear of Zidane’s side at the top of La Liga.

“What we lacked? The second half and playing for 90 minutes,” the Coach said after the game.

“We played very well in the first 45 minutes, but not the second. We must analyse our performance in depth.

“We made many mistakes. We lost the ball several times, which we don’t usually do, and we did so at important moments.

“We have to avoid these mistakes and play with more consistency. I have to detect the problem, I’m the one responsibility and we’re going to try.

“Sometimes we play well for 90 minutes, but we haven’t done so lately. It’s true Celta pressed us and that we didn’t play as we should have.

“We must have more confidence in our chances. You have to play well for one, two, three, four games… And we’re not doing that.

“I think we’re fine physically, we ran and ran. When you watch back the first half, we did very well, but in the second…

“It’s not a matter of running. It’s like their second goal, it came from a series of mistakes. Then our opponents lift themselves and you have your head down.

“Difference with Barca? Football isn’t always what you think. Sometimes there are difficulties like in the second half.

“Not everything went badly. There were things that we wouldn’t do usually. Explanation? I don’t have it. We’re going to try to fix things so that we have consistency.

“Florentino Perez in the dressing room? He went there to cheer the team on, nothing more. There’s still a lot of the season left, and we can’t be happy with how tonight went.

“Tomorrow’s going to be another day and we’ll go back to work. We’re not going to talk about La Liga.

“We have to go back to the day to day, game by game and playing with consistency, but we won’t go crazy.

“Transfers? I don’t want anyone right now. We’ll see until the 31st, but not right now. Why? Because I’m happy with my squad.”
