Barca tried for Buffon – report

Barcelona attempted to sign Gianluigi Buffon when he was at Parma but he had already agreed to join Juventus, according to a report in Spain.

Representatives from the Blaugrana travelled to Parma in early 2001 to evaluate his own future in an attempt to persuade him to join the Camp Nou.

A report in El Mundo Deportivo details the meeting in which the Italian international told the delegation: “I'm sorry, thanks for the offer, but I've already reached an agreement with Juventus.”

The report also claims how, as a joke, the goalkeeper handed over an Italian postcard with the words: “With all my love towards President Joan Gaspart.”

Buffon, who was 23 at the time, admitted later in his career on SportMediaset that he had the chance to join Barca but his father advised him to join The Old Lady.
