Raul: Madrid my first choice

Raul confirms he would prefer a return to Real Madrid over working at any other club but rules out an imminent role with Los Blancos.

The iconic forward spoke to Cadena Ser about his future and a number of other topics, and was asked about one day going back to Santiago Bernabeu, possibly as Coach.

“At the moment I’m not going to get the Coach’s licence. I’m going to go little by little,” he replied, Marca reports, citing his role as an ambassador for La Liga as taking precedence.

“Now I’m at another moment in my development. The LFP is giving me the opportunity to know the world of football from another point of view. It’s going to enrich me. It’s a much calmer stage.

“If I ever feel I’m ready [to be Madrid Coach] then I won’t mind. I’ve taken a lot of risks in my life and I always will. I hope at some point to help Madrid but having a successful playing career doesn’t mean you’d be a good Coach.

“Madrid has opened doors for me. I have a good relationship with the President, but there’ll be a time to return. If I worked at a club my first choice would be Madrid. There is time to return.

“Everything has been talked about: Coach, sporting director, President. We’ll see. I don’t rule anything out.”

Raul’s former teammate Zinedine Zidane currently sits on the Madrid bench, replacing Rafa Benitez earlier in January, and Raul spoke about the Frenchman.

“With him the team will have more options to aspire to something important in the League and the Champions League,” Raul predicted.

“I thought Benitez would continue, but Zidane knows the group and it was a great opportunity to raise spirits.”
