Lopetegui responds to Madrid links

Porto boss Julen Lopetegui has played down speculation linking him with the Coach’s job at Real Madrid.

The former Madrid goalkeeper, who led La Rojita to the 2013 European Under-21 Championship, has seen his stock rise further this season after guiding the Portuguese giants to a 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Consequently, links between the 48-year-old and Los Blancos have gained momentum since Wednesday, but he insists he is only focused on Porto’s fortunes.

“This news doesn’t interest me. I’m very happy to be the Coach of Porto,” he was quoted as saying by AS.

“I’m very happy about the three-year project that I’ve started here. We have a very important game [against Academica] on Saturday.”

Lopetegui, who also played second fiddle to Carles Busquets at Barcelona between 1994 and 1997, incidentally spent 2008-09 in charge of Madrid’s Castilla team.
