Silva excited for Madrid challenge

New Real Madrid signing Lucas Silva says he is excited about the challenge that lies ahead and cannot wait to get started.

The Brazilian midfielder will pen a contract at the Santiago Bernabeu tying him to the club until 2020, following his signing from Cruzeiro, and maintains he is ready to play right away.

“Just now I was in pre-season with my club but I’m in great physical shape. I think I’ll be ready to settle in after a couple of training sessions, although it is the coaching staff that decides, but I’m really keen to play,” he told Marca.

“I think the reason I’ve signed for Real Madrid is based on the team’s needs. I said before I was willing to go now or wait, but it wasn’t really in my hands.

“However, everything has worked out fine so I’m delighted with the decision and can’t wait. Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world but I’m up for the challenge and really excited.

“I know I’m going to a club where there is a lot of competition, who play in a very tough League and the Champions League, but I’m ready for all of that.”

The 21-year-old admits he has not spoken to Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti and does not even know what number shirt he will be wearing.

“I haven’t had the chance to speak to the Coach yet. I’ve spoken to other people at the club, though, such as the sporting director, and I know what they want from me.

“They’ve watched me at Cruzeiro and are aware of my attributes, but at the end of the day it’s the Coach who calls the shots and I’ll adapt to the team.

“I don’t know what number I’ll be wearing but I’d like No 16, which is what I wore at Cruzeiro and is my favourite number, yet I don’t know if that’s possible.

“In any case, whatever number I get is fine by me because all I really care about it playing.”

Silva revealed that stories he had waived his right to 10 per cent of the transfer fee to join Los Blancos were true.

“That’s right. It was best for all concerned and at this stage all I wanted was to play for Madrid.

“I’ve been given a unique opportunity and intend to make the most of it,” he concluded.
