Diego Simeone says his Atletico Madrid team will not be intimidated by a sell-out crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu against Real Madrid on Thursday.

Atleti face their cross-city rivals in the Last 16 of the Copa del Rey having beaten them 2-0 in last week’s first leg at the Vicente Calderon, and Simeone insists it does not necessarily mean they are favourites to progress.

“We’ve got a positive result from the first leg but obviously we’ll be up against the World and European champions, yet even if they changed just one first-choice player we’d have to produce a very good performance,” the Argentine told AS.

“The stadium will be completely packed because they have lowered ticket prices and the atmosphere will be electric. That’s a good thing and we’re hoping it will be lively with a lot of pressure.

“It’s logical a club with so many fans and a stadium with a large capacity reduces the prices so they can watch the game cheaply, so I’m sure it will be absolutely magnificent.

“But those in the stands won’t be playing the match – the ones on the pitch will.”

Simeone says he is expecting the game to be played at a fast tempo and is hoping his team can capitalise on that.

“I’m not expecting a contest that unfolds gradually. What I am expecting is one with lots of adrenaline, counter-attacks and chances on goal for both sides.

“The loss of possession in midfield could benefit both teams and I’m anticipating a dynamic match, not one that drags on until the 80th minute.”
