Rayo save pensioner from eviction

Rayo Vallecano have vowed to pay an 85-year-old woman’s rent after she was evicted from her home by police.

Carmen Martinez Ayudo was driven from her home after her son used it as a security on a €40,000 loan she knew nothing about, one he was unable to repay, reports the Guardian.

The pensioner’s plight was revealed after police turned up at her home to remove her from the property a month ago, after which a local anti-eviction committee managed to win her a reprieve, during which she claimed she was unable to sleep because of the worry.

However, on hearing of it Rayo immediately stepped in when they discovered she was a local woman from Vallecas, a working class neighbourhood of Madrid where the club is based.

“We are not going to stand around and do nothing. We are going to help this woman,” said boss Paco Jemez.

“Not just me but the whole coaching staff and the players. We’ll help her to find a place where she can live in dignity and not feel abandoned.”

Jemez added that he would like to help more people but it was not possible.

“In this case she is from the neighbourhood and as a club we couldn’t let slip this opportunity to help her,” he explained.
