‘No excuse…Atleti have to move on’

Diego Godin was despondent after Atletico Madrid were beaten by Valencia, losing 3-1 at Mestalla.

Valencia claimed three goals in 12 minutes, the first of which a Miranda own goal, and Godin rued the poor start for the champions but dismissed the suggestion tiredness from the midweek win over Juventus was a factor.

“It’s hard to take because we’re coming from a very nice week, with good games and we were hoping to win, or at least not lose,” he admitted, AS reports.

“The first 15 minutes were bad, a bad start that was very expensive.

“It would have been better to have a week to prepare for the match but it’s no excuse. We were poor for 15 minutes and they were superior.

“With the penalty [Diego Alves saving from Guilherme Siqueira] we could have gotten back in the game but we couldn’t overcome three goals.

“The lack of intensity and concentration cost us. Confusion between Miranda and the goalkeeper…after that we were another team.

“We played well, we were superior and we created chances.”

Godin did however take solace in the fact that it’s still early in the season and Atletico have time to recover.

“There’s nothing definitive but it hurts to lose. We have to correct the mistakes, draw conclusions and move on,” he said.

“The year just started and the League is very tight. We’ll continue to fight to win every game.

“It was a different atmosphere to against Juventus. This was a hostile environment. Just see how we were welcomed.”
