Mathieu to join Barcelona ‘soon’

Jeremy Mathieu will soon leave Valencia for Barcelona but the clubs have yet to agree on the exact terms of the transfer.

Mundo Deportivo report that Barca have agreed to meet Valencia’s demand of €20m for the captain, but while Barca want to pay in four instalments, Valencia want the full amount up front.

That is understood to be the only sticking point as Mathieu is essentially a Barca player and is willing to give up his cut of the transfer to help it go through.

Mathieu has been named in Valencia’s squad to tour South America and the clubs were talking into the late hours to wrap up a deal before Valencia left for Peru.

But he is on the tour, although will be allowed to leave should an agreement for his transfer be reached. Mathieu had asked not to go on the trip but his request was denied.

Update: It's since been reported by AS that Mathieu has not travelled to South America and has instead remained in Madrid after saying goodbye to his Valencia teammates.
