‘Madrid defence was sensational’

Emilio Butragueno was impressed with the rear-guard action that led to Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey win over Barcelona.

Los Blancos claimed the trophy with goals from Angel Di Maria and Gareth Bale, Marc Bartra netting in reply for Barca.

AS reports that Butragueno complimented the Madrid backline on their display in his post-match comments.

“The defensive work was sensational. There was a lot of solidarity,” he said.

“We faced a great team and we’ve done really well. Casillas didn’t have much to do.

“We have to thank the fans for their support. It’s very important for the future.”

Butragueno added that Bale’s intervention was crucial as Madrid were always going to need a second goal.

“It was an interesting game with two different styles,” he continued.

“We scored early and they recovered so we needed a second goal.

“We struggled when playing narrow. The great move came when we needed it most.

“The goal shows how much quality Bale has. It was spectacular, amazing, the key and most important moment of the game.”
