Simeone: Atletico not there yet

Diego Simeone has insisted Atletico Madrid have to beat Milan at Vicente Calderon to guarantee progression in the Champions League.

A Diego Costa goal gave Atleti victory at San Siro after a pair of fine saves from Thibaut Courtois prevented the hosts taking the lead.

Speaking to Canal+, El Cholo conceded that despite a decent start for his side, Milan nearly went in front.

“The team started well. The first 10 minutes were good,” Simeone said.

“But Milan are a team with individuals that can cause problems and they came close to hurting us.

“I changed the team in the second half.

“The five-man midfield got better at dealing with [Mario] Balotelli and Kaka as they floated between the lines.

“During the second half we got better as the game went on.”

Simeone also paid tribute to his goalkeeper and the goal scorer.

“Courtois was fundamental in the first half when he stopped a clear chance for [Andrea] Poli,” Simeone added.

“During the second half the team played well and it was Costa who took the chance we had.

“The win is a good step but surely there is much to do in the Calderon.”
