Rosell’s Liga and Champions plan

Barcelona President Sandro Rosell is reportedly keen on reformatting the Primera Division, Segunda Division and Champions League.

Rosell has for a number of months been pushing for a reduced La Liga fixture schedule and an expansion of UEFA’s premier competition.

Today, Cadena Ser have reported on the specifics behind Rosell’s intentions, which Rosell has allegedly already begun to circulate to those concerned.

The Barca President is understood to be pushing for a 16-team Primera Division so as to ease the fixture list by eight games a year.

Of those 16 top-flight sides, each season would see the top eight qualify for the Champions League, as part of Rosell’s hopes for a 64-team European Cup.

From eight groups of four teams in the competition, Rosell would push for 16 groups of four, with the top two from each group progressing and an extra play-off round of 32 introduced.

For this expanded European competition, Rosell envisages La Liga’s top six League sides qualifying directly and a further two going into the qualifying round.

The next four positions in the Division would then receive direct or qualifying access to the Europa League.

Rosell’s plan also includes La Segunda, and reformatting that from one Division of 22 teams to two of 16 teams each.

The sides to finish first in each of these Leagues would be promoted automatically to La Primera and the positioned sides second to fourth in each table would compete in play-offs to determine a third promoted team.
