Senna welcomes Villa to MLS

Former Spain international Marcos Senna has believes the arrival of David Villa in MLS will help football continue to grow in the United States.

Senna spoke to Marca to mark his 38th birthday and reflected on his career, both at club level and international level, and on the standing of the United States national team and the MLS.

“I feel privileged to be able to keep playing at a good level,” the New York Cosmos midfielder said.

“Looking at my career, I’ve been in Brazil, then in Europe, where I grew a lot as a player. Villarreal was a privilege.

“Then there was the national team, which was a magnificent stage, where I was part of a unique generation.

“I’m now I’m in New York, where I still enjoy football, but there are different ways of seeing the sport.

“[MLS] is a League that is growing a lot even though it has nothing to do with European or Brazilian Leagues. But there’s already a certain level and there is a growing support and more people are starting to like football.

“The arrival of quality players like Villa is very important. I’ve been speaking to him and when he arrives, we’ll go see the city together.

“The national team is doing good things in recent tournaments. It’s an ambitious country and if they want something, they get it. In my opinion they have not put 100% into football but there is increasing interest and growing trends every year.

“I was very surprised that so many people come to the stadiums and even Brazil to follow the national team.”
