Real Betis players ask for Quique Setien return

Real Betis players have asked the club to reappoint former boss Quique Setien should they sack current Coach Rubi, say reports.

Setien left Los Verdiblancos this summer and was replaced by Rubi - who guided Espanyol into Europe last summer - but who has struggled to make a strong start at Betis.

The Seville-based club lie in La Liga’s relegation zone with just nine points from their opening nine rounds of action, having fallen to a 3-1 defeat at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

Quique Setien linked with Shakhtar Donetsk job

Former Real Betis boss Quique Setien has been linked with the vacant post at Ukrainian side Shakthar Donetsk.

According to reports in Portuguese newspaper A Bola, via Mundo Deportivo, the 60-year old is on the shortlist to replace departing manager Paulo Fonseca, who has joined Serie A giants AS Roma.

Espanyol are set to replace outgoing Coach Rubi with Quique Setien in an effective swap deal with Real Betis, claim El Mundo Deportivo.

It is claimed that the former Las Palmas boss, who left Betis this month, is now the favourite at the Catalan club to replace Rubi - who insists he wants to replace Setien at Los Verdiblancos.

The report follows on from a report in Marca which claimed this is a ‘key week’ for the future of Calleja, who guided the Yellow Submarine to safety and the Europa League quarter-finals this season.

Quique Setien to leave Real Betis

Quique Setien and Real Betis looks set to part ways later today following the end of the 2018-19 La Liga season.

Setien, 60, oversaw a final day 2-0 win at Real Madrid, however he stated in his post match press conference that decision would be made later today about his future.

"In a few hours time, the club will issue a statement regarding my future.

"I am pleased with how the season has gone for the team.

Real Betis have confirmed they will not sack Coach Quique Setien this season despite a prolonged run of poor form.

The club confirmed a report in El Mundo Deportivo say that Betis chiefs, including Director of Football Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, met on Thursday to discuss the immediate situation of the Coach.

Quique Setien: I expected another striker to arrive in January

Real Betis manager Quique Setien has confirmed that he had hoped to sign another striker during the January transfer window. 

The Andalusian side brought in Jese, on loan from PSG, defender Emerson, on loan from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro - as part of a co-ownership deal with Barcelona, and Diego Lainez on a €14m deal from Mexican club Club America.

However they also loaned out Takashi Inui, Alex Alegria, Ryad Boudebouz and Antonio Sanabria - and Seitien was hoping for more incoming reinforcements to balance his squad.

Quique Setien: Real Betis keep improving

Real Betis boss Quique Setien has credited his side for ‘keeping growing and keeping improving’ after rising to fifth in La Liga.

Sunday’s 3-1 victory at Espanyol brought Betis into the top five and brought their winning streak in the league to three consecutive games.

“It’s true that this year we have gone through some difficult moments but in general the team has kept growing and kept improving,” Setien told reporters, as cited by Betis club media.
