Deschamps: Spain courting Laporte

Didier Deschamps has hinted that Spain are courting Athletic Bilbao’s French-born defender Aymeric Laporte.

The 21-year-old is understood to be considering switching his international allegiance to Spain from France after continuing to elude a senior call-up, with 30-year-old Loic Perrin being elected to replace the injured Mamadou Sakho, but the Coach insists he will not select players in a bid to fend off interest from other countries.

“Laporte? I’ve treated him the same as everyone else,” he told reporters.

Laporte loving life at Athletic

Aymeric Laporte has revealed that he is loving life at Athletic Bilbao, where “I hope to go as far as I can and win some trophies”.

The French defender’s consistently-impressive displays for Los Leones since his debut in 2011 have seen him linked with moves to Champions League clubs and a switch to La Roja, but he has made it clear that he is happy with the status quo.

‘Spain seducing Laporte’

The Coach of the France Under-21 side has said Spain are ‘seducing’ Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte into switching allegiance.

Laporte is the captain of Les Bleus’ Under-21s but the Athletic-trained centre-back remains eligible for La Roja as he hasn’t made a senior competitive appearance for the Euro 2016 hosts and recently floated the idea he could swap to his adopted country.

Barca in centre-back hunt?

Barcelona are reportedly looking to revamp their centre-back options with one of Aymeric Laporte, Marquinhos, Jose Maria Gimenez and John Stones.

According to Mundo Deportivo, sporting director Robert Fernandez believes La Blaugrana’s backline needs freshening up with the future in mind.

Although Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano remain Barca’s first-choice partnership, with Marc Bartra, Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen on standby, the Argentine is now 31 and has not yet abandoned hopes of returning to midfield.

'Laporte wouldn't be considered if...'

Aymeric Laporte would not be considered by Spain if he played his club football in Germany, according to Borussia Monchengladbach defender Alvaro Dominguez.

Laporte was suggested as a defensive option following Sergio Ramos and Inigo Martinez's withdrawals from La Roja's party for games against Luxembourg and Ukraine, despite representing France at youth level, while Dominguez has not added to his two caps since leaving Atletico Madrid for the Bundesliga in 2012.

“It would be great to return [to the Spain squad],” the 27-year-old told Marca.

Del Bosque: Laporte? He’s excellent…

Vicente Del Bosque refused to be drawn on the suggestion Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte could switch allegiances and represent Spain.

Laporte confirmed it was a possibility as he wants to play at Euro 2016 but, despite captaining the France Under-21 side, he has yet to make a senior appearance.

The centre-back qualifies to play for Spain and was approached by La Roja when he was younger, a fact of which Del Bosque was aware.

Laporte: Spain switch? We’ll see…

Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte isn’t ruling out switching international allegiance to Spain despite being captain of the France Under-21 side.

Laporte is quoted by AS from an appearance on Radio Euskadi as taking a diplomatic stance when the subject was raised, having not yet debuted for the senior Les Bleus side.

“I’ve said that my bet is France and if the Coach relies on me, then there’s no doubt,” he began.

Laporte quiet on exit reports

Aymeric Laporte is remaining tight-lipped on speculation that he could leave Athletic Bilbao this summer.

The French defender has been linked with a number of Europe’s biggest clubs in recent months after another solid season with Los Leones, culminating in a Copa del Rey final with Barcelona on Saturday, but he insists he is only thinking about leading his side to glory.

"What I will say is that I have a contract until 2018 and I wish to remain quiet [about my future],” he said at a Press conference.
