Susaeta: We have to improve away

Markel Susaeta has called for Athletic Bilbao to play better away from home when they face Malaga next week.

Los Leones travel to La Rosaleda on Monday to play the Costa del Sol outfit, but the winger has asked for his team to up their levels away from San Mames.

“We have to start playing better away from home, “ he told reporters. “It has to come sooner rather than later – and what better way than to win in Malaga.

Susaeta eyes first San Mames goal

Markel Susaeta has admitted that he and his Athletic Bilbao teammates have discussed scoring the first ever goal in the new San Mames.

On from saying goodbye to the old San Mames at the end of last season after 100 years playing there, Athletic officially open their new €218m ground next door this Week 4 with Celta Vigo’s visit on the Monday night.

“The most important thing is the three points, but we want to provide a homage to the fans,” reflected Susaeta to reporters this week.

Athletic triumph in Valladolid

Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Bilbao reign got off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid at the Jose Zorrilla.

The Basques opened the game brightly with Markel Susaeta almost giving them the lead when he pulled a shot wide of the near post, but on 28 minutes the same player did hit the target when he found the bottom corner from Benat Etxebarria’s cross.

However, the lead lasted just three minutes as Patrick Ebert latched on to Oscar’s square ball to drill a low shot past Gorka Iraizoz.

Susaeta: Athletic mood is great

Markel Susaeta has enthused at Athletic Bilbao’s work so far in preseason, even as he admits the attack could do with some fine-tuning.

Work has begun this summer under new Coach Ernesto Valverde and, whilst results have not been there, the team’s winger is enthusiastic.

“The team is feeling great, particularly in defence where we have been doing a terrific job,” Susaeta told reporters today.

“It is true that in attack we still need a little work.

‘Madrid a good chance for joy’

Markel Susaeta believes that Athletic Bilbao have a good opportunity to please their fans by beating Real Madrid this weekend.

Week 31 sees the Basques welcome Madrid to San Mames for the final time in the stadium’s history, before the club move into the San Mames Barria for 2013-14.

For Susaeta, beating the reigning League champions is an opportunity that the team must take, to provide a fitting tribute to the ground.

“San Mames would deserve something more,” the winger told reporters this week.

Susaeta worried by lack of consistency

Athletic Bilbao winger Markel Susaeta has lamented his side's lack of consistency this season.

Los Leones have endured a terrible time this campaign, having been knocked out of the Europa League and the Copa del Rey at the early stages – whilst also currently sitting 14th in La Liga.

And the 25-year-old has claimed that only the bad form of other teams has saved them.

“The only positive for us has been that sides like Granada and Depor have earned less points than us,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

Susaeta 'concerned' with Athletic form

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Markel Susaeta has revealed that the whole team are concerned with their recent form.

The San Mames side are currently 14th in La Liga, losing their last three games, and the 25-year-old has claimed that this season's slide is of concern.

“The whole team is working hard to try and get out of this,” he told AS. “But it is concerning that we haven't collected any points from the last three matches.

Susaeta blames poor finishing

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Markel Susaeta has blamed poor finishing for the club's disappointing start to the season.

Marcelo Bielsa's men currently sit in 15th place in La Liga, having won just four matches, and the 24-year-old has claimed that their wastefulness in front of goal has cost them dearly.

“Lately we've been quite poor defensively,” he told a Press conference. “But we have to be more attentive in front of goal.

“Doing that will put us in a better position to take some more points.”

Susaeta seeks La Roja return

Athletic Bilbao winger Markel Susaeta is keen to see more action with Spain after netting on his debut against Panama.

Susaeta scored La Roja’s fourth goal in the 5-1 friendly rout two weeks ago but was the subject of some controversy in the build-up when he referred to international duty as ‘one thing’, a comment some misinterpreted as political.
