Luis Enrique explains Inigo Martinez absence from Spain

Spain boss Luis Enrique has explained Inigo Martinez’s absence from the national squad despite playing for Athletic Club Bilbao.

The Basque club had already confirmed the defender suffered a ‘muscular injury’ in the recent draw with Barca but despite appearing against old club Real Sociedad the following week, was excluded from Spain’s squad.

“We were told of his situation and decided not to call upon Inigo,” Enrique told reporters, as cited by Diario AS.

Inigo deal Athletic’s best yet

Athletic Bilbao may have lost Aymeric Laporte, but as Asif Norat explains, they have upgraded by replacing the Frenchman with Inigo Martinez.

Athletic Bilbao aren’t normally active in the transfer market, yet they pulled off the best deal they possibly could after selling Aymeric Laporte to Premier League giants Manchester City, bringing in Inigo Martinez from arch-rivals Real Sociedad.

Compared to the other teams in La Liga, Athletic are truly in a League of their own due to their unique youth academy and policy of only selecting individuals that are native to the Basque Country. Generally speaking, the player must have a concrete heritage in the area but don’t necessarily need to be born there.
