Fresh start for Moyes and La Real

As David Moyes opts to restore his reputation with Real Sociedad, Mike Barnes considers the size of the task facing the Scot in San Sebastian.

The decline of Real Sociedad this season has been so dramatic and unexpected that the club’s decision to dispense with the services of Coach Jagoba Arrasate had become a foregone conclusion. The arrival of Moyes at Anoeta was much less inevitable, but the appointment has a good chance of working out for both sides.

Cholo’s FIFA omission baffling

This week FIFA announced the Coach of the Year contenders. Garreth Nunn considers Diego Simeone’s surprising omission.

As the Ballon d’Or and Coach of the Year nominees were announced it was the latter that rasied more than a few eyebrows and tempers amongst Atletico Madrid fans. Last season Los Rojiblancos were left scratching their heads as Diego Simeone was left off the list, whilst others who had also only managed for six months were included. Surely, they thought, it wouldn’t happen again after 2012-13’s work. They were wrong.

'Illarra ready to replace Xabi Alonso'

Former Real Sociedad boss Philippe Montanier believes Asier Illarramendi is ready to become Xabi Alonso’s heir at Real Madrid.

The young midfielder left La Real earlier this month to join Los Blancos in a deal worth around €40m.

And the French Coach, who is now at Rennes, is confident that his ex-colleague can be a success at Santiago Bernabeu.

“Not only is he a midfielder that works hard to get the ball back, but he has enough quality to be involved in getting things moving and distributing the ball,” Montanier told AS.

Montanier: Already a great year

Philippe Montanier has asserted that Real Sociedad can reflect on a great season, regardless of if they secure Champions League qualification or not.

La Real have seen an advantage over Valencia slip from +5 to -2 heading into Week 38’s deciding fixtures.

Los Che, playing at Sevilla, just need to now match Real’s result at Deportivo to guarantee fourth spot, but if the teams finish level on points, then the Basques will take fourth place and entry into the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.
