Athletic Bilbao’s dreadful start to the season continued on Monday as Marcelo Bielsa’s men shipped another four goals to leave them propping up the embryonic Primera Liga table. Their leaky defence is nothing new, but Athletic’s problems appear to run much deeper.

Hope at last for Malaga

After a summer of turmoil on the south coast, Malaga have some optimism to cling on to. Garreth Nunn looks at the record-breaking Fabrice Olinga.

Salomon Rondon had been sold, Ruud Van Nistelrooy had retired and Julio Baptista was still out injured with no fixed date of when he would return. Manuel Pellegrini has seen the squad that he worked so hard for taken apart and there was nothing he could do about it. With the club still in talks to sign ex-Real Madrid and Barcelona striker Javier Saviola, the Coach from Chile had no option but to call up young Fabrice Olinga for Malaga’s tie away to Celta Vigo to make up the numbers.

Olympic failure Spain’s vital lesson?

Luis Milla and his players were highly criticised after crashing out the Olympics, but it could just be the experience they needed writes Kieran Canning.

Two games, two defeats, no goals, eliminated. That was the sum total of Spanish football team’s contribution to the Olympic Games.

A competition that started as the chance to secure their second major competition of the summer (third if you include the U-19s retaining their European title) ended in just four days.

“This team would have grown and been a medallist,” claimed Coach Luis Milla afterwards. Ill-advised words so quickly after defeat and certainly ones not echoed by the Spanish media.
