Muniain ‘still only 20!’

Iker Muniain’s former and present Spain Under-21 Coaches have offered their insight into the youngster’s drop in form this year.

The attacking winger was a protagonist to Athletic Bilbao’s work last season but has struggled this term to replicate similar consistent form.

For his former Under-21 Coach at national level Luis Milla, patience is being pleaded.

Muniain wants result at Barca

Iker Muniain has warned that he and his Athletic Bilbao teammates will be going to the Camp Nou on Saturday for a result against Barcelona.

Athletic are loitering near the wrong end of the table after a poor start to the season, but it has not detracted Muniain from a positive mindset in travelling to Barca this Saturday.

“This game is always nice to play as a game of football because we never go to Camp Nou with anything other than the desire to pick up a positive result,” commented the diminutive winger.

Even as the second leg in Denmark next Tuesday now looks like a formality, Muniain has reiterated that Spain’s desire is to win it.

Muniain out of Spain contention

Iker Muniain reportedly cannot return to any level of international football until he apologises for his behaviour at the Olympics.

The Athletic Bilbao player was seen as one of the more senior members of Luis Milla’s squad at London 2012, who were eliminated at the group stage.

However, in confronting the referee during and at the end of Spain’s 1-0 defeat to Honduras, Muniain has reportedly been removed from consideration to represent Spain at senior or Under-21 level indefinitely.

Athletic’s unrealistic perception

Athletic Bilbao’s petty argument with Javi Martinez shows the club still have an unrealistic image of themselves, argues Richard Martin.

How did a player who just four months ago was crying his eyes out with the rest of the team after losing a European final suddenly become so unpopular?

He may not have been blubbering to the same extent as Iker Muniain, but when the final whistle blew in May in Bucharest to signal the end of Athletic Bilbao’s European adventure, Javi Martinez was visibly distraught. When he collected his runners-up medal from Michel Platini, he was so upset he could only stare at the ground.

Llorente out of training again

Fernando Llorente again had to stop training with Athletic Bilbao earlier than planned today, with it presumed to be for a recurrence of his injury.

The forward, who has yet to appear for the club this season after a contract dispute, began being re-assimilated into first-team affairs almost two weeks ago at the close of the transfer window.

However, he then missed a call-up to the team’s next match against Real Valladolid after suffering a hamstring injury.
