Bielsa names Bilbao squad

Marcelo Bielsa has named his 19-man Athletic Bilbao squad for the match against Valencia tomorrow.

Los Leones host Ernesto Valverde's men looking for the three points that could take them nine points clear of the relegation zone.

And they do so with Iker Munain back in the squad after serving a one-match suspension.

Full squad: Iraizoz, Raúl, Toquero, Aurtenetxe, Laporte, San José, Iturraspe, Llorente, De Marcos, Munain Ibai, Susaeta, Lopez, Iraola, Aduriz, Castillo, Ekiza, Igor Martínez, Ramalho.

‘Muniain bottled it’ over Osasuna

Former Osasuna defender and captain Cesar Cruchaga has accused Iker Muniain of deliberately getting booked last weekend, so as to skip facing Los Rojillos.

Muniain picked up a fifth yellow card of the season last weekend and subsequently is suspended for Athletic Bilbao’s trip to Pamplona for Basque clash with Osasuna.

According to Cruchaga, who spent 13 years in Osasuna’s first team, the winger deliberately got himself banned, out of fear of making the trip.

Muniain: It was a painful defeat

Athletic Bilbao forward Iker Muniain has admitted that last night's defeat to Real Sociedad was 'very painful'.

The San Mames side lost at home to their Basque rivals 3-1, and the young Spain international has claimed that the second goal is what killed them.

“It was a very painful defeat,” he told “It was really bad. But we are desperate to get out of the crisis as soon as possible.

“We did well in the first half, but as soon as they got that second goal, it killed us. It was an impossible match.

Muniain: Situation above derby

Iker Muniain has reflected that Athletic Bilbao’s League position and not the fact that it is a derby, makes beating Real Sociedad this Friday important.

Week 25’s opening fixture sees Athletic play host to Basque rivals Real 14th in the table and just six points above the relegation zone.

“Our current situation is above everything else. We want to be out of it as soon as possible and we hope to put together a run of wins to be a little higher in the table,” commented Muniain to reporters this week.

Muniain: Rehab in a few days

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Iker Muniain has revealed that he will begin rehabilitation on his strained knee ligament in a few days.

The 20-year-old limped off in the club's 4-0 loss to Espanyol at the weekend, with reports indicating that he would be out for up to four weeks.

But the Spain international told the club's official Facebook that he is ready for physical therapy, and also remarked on the resounding loss to the Periquitos.

Strained ligament for Muniain

Iker Muniain has been dealt a blow with the news that he faces the next few weeks out injured with a strained knee ligament.

The tricky winger sustained the injury during Athletic Bilbao’s 4-0 home defeat to Espanyol and tests have since revealed the full damage.

The Under-21 international is now facing a number of weeks on the sidelines with the grade I strain in his right knee.

Bielsa clears up Zubizarreta lunch

Marcelo Bielsa has hit out at the Press for making more of a meeting he had with Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta than necessary.

The duo were pictured lunching together earlier this week, with rumours sparked that they were discussing possible transfers for Athletic Bilbao duo Ander Herrera and Iker Muniain.

Zubi talks transfers with Bielsa?

Andoni Zubizarreta’s lunchtime meeting with Athletic Bilbao Coach Marcelo Bielsa prompted rumours of possible transfer discussions this week.

Former goalkeeper and current Barcelona sporting director Zubizarreta met with Bielsa on Monday, prompting rumours in the Spanish media that Ander Herrera and Iker Muniain’s availability to the Catalan club may have been discussed.

However, Marca suggest that the meeting was more innocently arranged as a convenience, with the duo both filming for a documentary on San Mames.

Guardiola eyeing Muniain move?

Reports today suggest that Pep Guardiola would like to bring Iker Muniain to Bayern Munich in the summer.

Guardiola is set to start a three-year contract with the Bundesliga giants from the summer and is reportedly already working on possible transfer targets.

Diminutive winger Muniain has struggled for form this season, but is reportedly an initial target for Guardiola, who is known to have admired the player from his time as Barcelona boss.
