U-21s: Spain overcome Albania

Spain have moved a step closer to securing a place in the European Under-21 Championship qualification play-offs with a win at Albania.

Julen Lopetegui’s side ran out 2-0 winners at the Ruzhdi Bizhuta Stadium in Elbasan on Monday afternoon thanks to second half goals from Iker Muniain and Gerard Deulofeu.

After a goalless first half, Sergi Roberto’s burst forward and pass set up Muniain for the opening strike just past the hour mark for the visitors.

Valverde disproves old adage, but…

Ernesto Valverde’s return to Athletic Bilbao has seen an upturn in fortunes, but all is still not well at San Mames, as Dave Redshaw explains.

Ernesto Valverde’s appointment as Athletic Bilbao boss in the summer, following his failure to lead Valencia into the Champions League, has so far gone some way to disproving the old adage that you should never go back. The 49-year-old represented the club as a player in the 1990s and then as first team Coach from 2003-05, leading his team to fifth place in his first season and subsequent UEFA Cup qualification, while a disappointing mid-table finish 12 months later saw him lose his job.

Muniain: Effort most important

Iker Muniain was most impressed with Spain Under-21s’ effort put into their strong start to European Championship qualification.

La Rojita followed up Thursday’s 6-2 win in Austria with a 4-0 blitz at home to Albania on Monday night, as qualification for the 2015 edition of the tournament in Czech Republic began.

“We have begun this qualifying campaign well, winning on both occasions, but the important thing is that the team has done a good job,” reflected the new team captain Muniain post-match.

“But that’s not the important thing though. The important thing is to win.

Athletic triumph in Valladolid

Ernesto Valverde’s Athletic Bilbao reign got off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid at the Jose Zorrilla.

The Basques opened the game brightly with Markel Susaeta almost giving them the lead when he pulled a shot wide of the near post, but on 28 minutes the same player did hit the target when he found the bottom corner from Benat Etxebarria’s cross.

However, the lead lasted just three minutes as Patrick Ebert latched on to Oscar’s square ball to drill a low shot past Gorka Iraizoz.

Spain U-21s to remain unchanged

Julen Lopetegui will reportedly run against Italy in today’s UEFA Under-21 Championship Final with the same line-up Spain used against Norway.

Heading into La Rojita’s second successive appearance in the competition final, on from the 2011 edition they are defending this summer in Israel, the team will reportedly remain unchanged.

Rodrigo Moreno is therefore expected to keep his place in attack ahead of tournament top scorer Alvaro Morata, whilst the only doubt in the XI reflects Lopetegui’s choice between Cristian Tello and Iker Muniain.

De Gea, Isco in Euro U-21 squad

Manchester United’s David de Gea and Malaga’s Isco Alarcon are notable inclusions in Spain’s squad for the European Under-21 Championships.

De Gea and Isco were both seen as outside bets to make Vicente del Bosque’s senior squad for the Confederations Cup this year, but their inclusion in Julen Lopetegui’s means that they will not be heading out to Brazil.

‘I hope we delay Barca title party’

Iker Muniain is hopeful that Athletic Bilbao can upset Barcelona’s title hopes this weekend by taking the three points at San Mames.

Barca go into the fixture aware that a win followed by Real Madrid losing in the Madrid derby would guarantee them a 22nd League title.

However, Athletic’s tricky winger is adamant that Saturday evening’s hosts will be out to crash the party.

Muniain feels 'misunderstood'

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Iker Muniain has revealed that he has felt 'misunderstood' at some points this season.

And the Spain international has admitted that he has endured a tough time this year, whilst also commenting on the match with Granada this Monday.

Bielsa with a warning for Muniain

Athletic Bilbao boss Marcelo Bielsa has claimed that Iker Muniain has to work harder if he wants to stay in the starting XI.

The youngster scored the winner last weekend as Los Leones defeated Valencia 1-0 at San Mames.

But the former Chile Coach has admitted that he many not play in tomorrow's game against Getafe.

“Muniain has had problems with injury and suspension this season,” he told a Press conference.

“With that, another player gets a chance. And if they do well, then they stay [in the team].
