Valverde warns of Valencia threat

Ernesto Valverde has warned his Athletic Bilbao players to beware of Valencia’s ‘consistency’ ahead of Thursday’s meeting at San Mames.

The Basques are looking to close the gap on seventh-placed Malaga as they seek a Europa League place, while a win for Los Che would see them within one point of Atletico Madrid in third.

Muniain: Bilbao focused on CL

Iker Muniain says Athletic Bilbao are fully focused on the Champions League group game at BATE Borisov, despite their poor domestic form.

Los Leones face the Belarus outfit having collected just four points from a possible 18 in La Liga so far this term, but the 21-year-old believes it is something the players must put out of their minds on Tuesday night.

“The team is fine and we can’t wait for the game, although we need to change our mindset as we’ve underperformed in the League.

Line-ups: Athletic-Napoli

Athletic Bilbao have named an unchanged line-up for the second leg of their Champions League play-off against Napoli.

Los Leones went to Italy last week and drew 1-1 with the Serie A outfit, thanks to a first half strike from Iker Muniain.

And Ernesto Valverde has kept faith with that same side as they host Rafa Benitez’s men for the first game at the newly-renovated San Mames.

Muniain ‘will renew Athletic deal’

Iker Muniain is expected to sign a new contract with Athletic Bilbao, tying the forward to the club until 2018.

AS reports that talks between the player and the club are at an advanced stage and despite a difference of opinion over Muniain’s pay packet, it’s not expected to derail negotiations.

The release clause in the new contract is likely to be put at around €50m after Muniain decided his career prospects would be better served by staying at San Mames.

World Cup Squad Selector: Muniain

Spain are blessed with wonderful football talents and Iker Muniain is no exception. If only Vicente Del Bosque could find a place for him, Frank Tigani suggests.

Before the Confederations Cup Spain striker Fernando Torres boldly claimed, “Spain are the new Brazil”. His comment was in reference to how today, much like Brazil in the past, it seems there is an endless conveyor belt of talent coming out of Spain.  Few would argue with Torres on this point.

Athletic to renew four contracts

Athletic Bilbao will offer new deals to Iker Muniain, Ander Herrera, Ander Iturrapse and Aymeric Laporte.

AS reports that President Josu Urrutia wants to build the club’s future around the quartet and avoid the kind of situation that saw Fernando Llorente join Juventus on a free transfer or Javi Martinez prised away by Bayern Munich.

Muniain is the immediate priority after he asked to postpone talks until the end of the season.

‘Muniain, Athletic at ease’

Ernesto Valverde praised Iker Muniain’s continued goalscoring form and Athletic Bilbao’s general performance against Celta Vigo.

The Basques ran out 4-0 winners at San Mames for a  4-1 aggregate win in the Copa del Rey Round of 32, helped in no small part by two strikes from Muniain.

“It is a good moment. He is taking the chances that he has and is offering us much. He was at ease, we are very happy,” mused Valverde post-match.

Victorious Valverde right to dream

Ernesto Valverde's Athletic Bilbao overcome their biggest test yet at home to Barcelona, convincing Joseph Sexton of their European credentials.

The clock ticked down at the new San Mames. Gaizka Toquero tried to run time down in the corner, unsuccessfully. Jose Manuel Pinto was charged down for the umpteenth time, scuffing his clearance. Pedro, Alexis Sanchez, and Neymar gathered at the far end of the field but the long ball was never likely to succeed. The final whistle brought elation, and relief.
