A late goal from Lionel Messi sealed a winning start for new Barcelona boss Quique Setien in a tight 1-0 victory at home to Granada.

Despite controlling the game, the home side struggled to break down their resilient visitors, until Messi's late intervention lifts them back above Real Madrid to the top of the La Liga table.

Barcelona dominated possession in the opening stages, with teenage striker Ansu Fati and Arturo Vidal both forcing strong saves from Granada keeper Rui Silva.

Alaves' John Guidetti joins Bundesliga side Hannover on loan

Alaves have confirmed the loaning of striker John Guidetti to Bundesliga side Hannover.

The former Manchester City forward joins Mubarak Wakaso, who joined Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning, in leaving the Basque in a busy week of transfer activity at the Estadio Menizorroza.

Asier Garitano has already brought in Victor Camarasa and Ismael Gutierrez on loan, and the former Real Sociedad boss is anticipated to make more moves before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Diego Costa returns to Atletico Madrid training

Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa has returned to first team training after two months on the sidelines with a back injury.

The Spanish international has not played for Diego Simeone's side since November 10, after the club opted to send him for surgery on a persistent problem with a herniated disc.

However, he has now joined up with his team mates for first team training, and the former Chelsea man is expected to join in with full sessions in the coming weeks.

Real Madrid midfielder Jorge De Frutos has joined Segunda Division side Rayo Vallecano on a six-month loan deal.

The 22-year old joined Real Madrid in Madrid-based club Rayo Majadahonda in 2018, but he has failed to make a single first team appearance for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

However his impressive form for Real Madrid’s Castilla side did catch the eye, and he was the subject of loan offers in the summer.

Gareth Bale will miss Real Madrid clash with Sevilla due to an ongoing illness.

The Welsh international missed Los Blancos Supercopa success in Saudi Arabia due to a chest infection, but it was initially hoped he would be fit in time for the visit of Julen Lopetegui’s side.

However, Zinedine Zidane has not included him in the 19-man squad to today’s clash at the Santiago Bernabeu, as the hosts look to keep the title pressure on rivals Barcelona.

Eden Hazard set for February return for Real Madrid

Real Madrid have pencilled in a February return for Belgian international Eden Hazard, as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Hazard suffered ligament damage in the 2-2 Champions League draw against Paris Saint-Germain on November 26, following a foul from international team mate Thomas Meunier, and has not featured for Zinedine Zidane's side since.

Los Blancos were hopeful that the former Chelsea man would be available sooner, with next weekend's clash with Sevilla the original date for his first team comeback.
