Sevilla, Getafe and Espanyol record Europa League victories

Sevilla, Getafe and Espanyol all recorded Europa League victories in an impressive night for Spanish sides in the competition.

Javier Hernandez’s first half goal was enough for Sevilla to earn a 1-0 win at home to APOEL Nicosia and put them in control of Group A - a victory which was their 100th in European competition.

Espanyol recorded just their second win in nine matches in all competitions as they triumphed 2-0 at CSKA Moscow to ease the pressure on under-fire boss David Gallego.

The early Primera table has Sevilla and Barcelona level on points prior to their meeting at Camp Nou on Sunday and, seven fixtures in, it’s a fixture that already feels like a crossroads for both clubs.

Top of the table with 15 points sit Real Madrid, unbeaten domestically despite their Champions League headaches. Atletico Madrid are in third, a point behind - Granada are the unlikely occupants of second place - and Barca are fourth. Real Sociedad separate sixth-place Sevilla from their weekend hosts.

Newcastle eye Sevilla midfielder Rony Lopes

Sevilla are prepared to sell midfielder Rony Lopes just one month after his signing with Newcastle United interested, say reports.

Born in Brazil, Lopes spent his youth career at Benfica and Manchester City but joined Monaco in 2015 and, aside from a season on loan at Lille, has spent the time since at the club.

He subsequently joined the Andalusian club last month in a deal worth in the region of €20m but has not started any of the opening six games of the season - with substitute appearances against Celta Vigo and Qarabag.

Seville to host 2021 Europa League final

Sevilla's Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium will stage next season's UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday 26 May 2021.

The stadium previously hosted the 1986 European Cup final between Barcelona and Steaua București, when the Romanian club delivered one of the biggest shocks in the tournament’s history with a penalty shootout victory.

Julen Lopetegui: Sevilla deserved a draw

Sevilla boss Julen Lopetegui believes his team ‘matched’ Real Madrid in their La Liga clash and were unlucky not to secure a draw.

Karim Benzema’s header midway through the second half gave the points to Los Blancos but Lopetegui - who was sacked as Madrid boss a year ago - believes the Andalusian side were unfortunate.

He explained how his side matched Zinedine Zidane’s team all over the park but needed to be more penetrative in the final third.

Real Madrid unrecognisable from PSG defeat - Monchi

Sevilla sporting director Monchi has described Real Madrid as ‘unrecognisable’ in their victory in Seville as their midweek defeat to PSG.

Los Blancos had slumped to a three-goal loss in the French capital just four days prior to their trip to Sevilla - who had previously been unbeaten this season and recording a 1-0 victory.

Karim Benzema’s second half header was enough to seal victory for Zinedine Zidane’s side and it was the visitors who were on top throughout the match.

Granada loan for Roma's Maxime Gonalons

Granada have completed the season-long loan signing of Roma midfielder Maxime Gonalons, who spent last season at Sevilla.

As outlined by Marca, the loan fee stands at €2m while the Andalusian club also hold an option to sign the player permanently for €4m.

The France international joined Sevilla on a season-long loan deal from Roma last summer as Steven N’Zonzi moved to the Italian side in a permanent move.

Sevilla's Simon Kjaer joins Atalanta

Atalanta have completed the season-long loan signing of central defender Simon Kjaer from Sevilla, the club have confirmed.

The Bergamo-based club have already landed Luis Muriel and Guilherme Arana from Sevilla this summer after Martin Skrtel cancelled his contract with the Italian side.

The 30-year-old joined the Andalusian club from Fener two summers ago and has made 64 first-team appearances for Los Rojiblancos in the time since.

Sevilla sign goalkeeper Bono from Girona

Sevilla have made Girona goalkeeper Bono their 13th signing of the summer transfer window, according to Marca.

It will mean that more than half of the Andalusian club’s first-team squad for this season will be comprised of new summer arrivals at the behest of the return of sporting director Monchi and new Coach Julen Lopetegui.
