Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon linked to Real Madrid

Real Madrid have identified Athletic Club Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon as a possible signing in 2020, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has been first choice at the Basque giants this season ahead of Iago Herrerin and is said to have a €50m release clause in his current contract.

Simon has been a regular for the Spain Under-21 squads in recent years and helped the side to this summer’s European Championships title and is seen as one of the most promising goalkeepers in La Liga.

Arsenal, Everton look to Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez

Premier League clubs Arsenal and Everton are both interested in landing Athletic Club Bilbao defender Unai Nunez, say reports.

The promising defender, who has been at the club since he was a seven-year-old, last penned a deal at San Mames in October 2017 which Marca reported to have a €30m release clause attached and will run through until 2022.

That contract was signed just one month after Nunez made his first team debut for Los Leones and he has subsequently featured 53 times for the Basque giants.

RFEF criticise VAR in Athletic Bilbao-Valencia clash

The Spanish FA (RFEF) has launched an attack on VAR - following controversy in the weekend game between Athletic Bilbao and Valencia.

Valencia midfielder Denis Cheryshev scored the winner in a 1-0 victory at San Mames, however the goal was only confirmed following a lengthy consultation with VAR.

The video assistant referee ruled no offside against Moi Gomez in the build up to the goal, and the RFEF has requested an investigation into VAR provider Mediapro.

Athletic Club Bilbao are ‘happy but calm’ as they top La Liga after five rounds of action, midfielder Unai Lopez has explained.

The Basque giants are undefeated in the opening weeks of the campaign - winning three games and drawing twice, while conceding just one goal.

They have already claimed the scalp of Spanish champions Barcelona, Basque rivals Real Sociedad and saw off another regional rival, Alaves, on Saturday.

Basque derby set for United States

Athletic Club Bilbao and Real Sociedad look set to play a Basque derby in the United States next summer, according to Marca.

The Basque-themed Jaialdi festivities are set to take place in Boise (Idaho) next summer, and the clubs have plans to hold a match in the States to mark the event.

The report says that Athletic have drawn up an agreement to return to the United States in July and participate in one or two friendly matches.

Inaki Williams confirms Manchester United contact

Athletic Club Bilbao forward Inaki Williams has confirmed he received an approach from Manchester United recently.

Williams - who was linked with a move to Manchester United this summer - has signed until 2028 at the Basque giants, with his new contract falling just short of the 10-year deal Real Betis gave Denilson in 1997 - a Spanish record.

“I had contact from Manchester United but I cannot tell you who it was,” Williams told Cadena Ser.

Napoli sign free agent Fernando Llorente

Napoli have completed the signing of free agent Fernando Llorente despite the striker being linked with a return to Athletic Club Bilbao this summer.

The 34-year-old netted eight goals and provided five assists in just 1,238 minutes of action last season and he was previously linked to Barcelona this summer.

Asier Illarramendi ruled out for two months through injury

Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi is set for a spell on the sidelines with a broken leg

The Spanish international was injured in the 37th minute of the Basque derby against Athletic Bilbao on August 30, and the club have since confirmed he has suffered a fracture to his fibia.

Imanol Alguacil is expected to be without his club captain for at least two months, with a period of rehabilitation set to begin following an operation on September 2nd.
