Inaugurated in February 1982, the Estadio Nuevo Jose Zorrilla hosted three Group D World Cup matches that year, the only purpose-built stadium in the tournament, while the Copa del Rey final also took place there in April.

Standing at over 700 metres above sea level on an open plain, the ground earned the nickname El Estadio de la Pulmonia – the stadium of pneumonia – prompting the building of a new roof to keep out the wind. However, in July 1986 an 80kph gust blew it off and deposited it in the car park behind the stand.
