Real Sociedad moved into the multi-purpose Estadio Anoeta in August 1993, having outgrown their old Atocha home, with the first fixture a friendly between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid.
The arena was host to the European Junior Athletics Championships only two months earlier and is consequently encircled by a running track, with pop concerts and even rugby games frequently staged there.
In 1998 both the north and south ends of the stadium were developed with addition of a mezzanine tier between the two existing levels.
Plans have since been raised several times with the municipal authorities in San Sebastian to remove the athletics track to bring spectators closer to the pitch and increase capacity to 42,000. These have met with little success to date.
