Nelson Semedo: Quique Setien has total confidence in me

Barcelona defender Nelson Semedo has explained the club’s new Coach Quique Setien has shown total confidence in him.

The Portugal international had been widely linked with an exit from the Camp Nou last summer with Atletico de Madrid among the clubs strongly mentioned in relation to his transfer.

Semedo has played the full 90 minutes in each of the last four matches for the Blaugrana and has established himself as a regular in Setien’s starting line-up.

The right-back was signed by Benfica in the summer of 2017 for a €35m fee but has not always featured regularly for the side, with Sergi Roberto often preferred at full-back.

“Things are going well for me, the new Coach trusts me a lot and what I do is work as hard as I can to justify that confidence,” Semedo explained, as cited by Diario Sport and initially published by Portuguese newspaper A Bola.

“This may be my best season in Barcelona. I am very happy with what is happening to me, it is a pity that the team is not leading (in La Liga). But there is still a lot of games ahead of us and we can still become champions.”

Barcelona are currently three points off Real Madrid at the summit of La Liga and are out of the Copa del Rey following last week’s defeat at Athletic Club Bilbao at the quarter-final stage.

They face Napoli in the Round of 16 in the Champions League.
