Barcelona’s Marc Ter Stegen sidelined for Espanyol clash

Barcelona have confirmed goal keeper Marc Ter Stegen will miss the start of 2020, due to a persistent knee injury.

The German international was not included in the squad for today's La Liga Catalan derby clash with Espanyol, and he will also be absent from the travelling party for next week's Spanish Supercopa in Saudi Arabia.

Manager Ernesto Valverde told reporters from Marca during his pre match press conference that the club expects Ter Stegen to be out of action for 'some time', but added that the club's medical staff were not able to put a date on his return.

Former Valencia goal keeper Neto will step in to replace the former Borussia Monchengladbach stopper, in what will be his La Liga club debut at the RCDE Stadium.

Ter Stegen is joined on the sidelines by Arthur Melo and Ousmane Dembele, while Valverde has opted to include Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Arturo Vidal in the squad, despite them all only returning from South America two days ago.
